Respond to unplanned events in the power industry

Overview           

This Standard is about responding to unplanned events. Unplanned events could be emergencies, or could be in relation to, but not restricted to: fire, loss of supply, catastrophic failure, site break-in and theft of cables.

This includes investigating unplanned events, identifying options to mitigate them,  carrying out required response actions, escalating issues, communicating with appropriate people and recording information about events and response.

This Standard is for anyone in the power industry who may encounter unplanned events.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. respond to unplanned events that have the potential to cause risk to the network, people or property
  2. investigate unplanned events in line with organisational procedures to establish the cause and potential impact
  3. identify options to resolve issues in line with organisational procedures
  4. escalate issues in line with organisational procedures
  5. carry out required actions in response to unplanned events in line with organisational procedures
  6. communicate information about unplanned events at appropriate times in line with organisational procedures
  7. store approved tools and equipment in accordance with organisational safety procedures
  8. check and confirm the site is in a safe condition and secure before leaving in accordance with organisational procedures
  9. record information about actions taken to mitigate or resolve unplanned events in line with organisational procedures

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how you would receive information about unplanned events
  2. your organisation's procedures for dealing with unplanned events
  3. the types of unplanned events covered by your organisation's event procedures
  4. how to interpret unplanned event procedures and your responsibilities under event procedures
  5. risks to supply, people, environment, property and the organisation that can be caused by unplanned events
  6. organisational procedures for priority customers in relation to unplanned events and how to check their requirements and arrange alternative supply for them
  7. methods of mitigating risk from unplanned events
  8. the implications of failure to respond to unplanned events within specified timescales
  9. the event escalation process and who you need to communicate information to and when
  10. the regulations, policies, procedures and processes relating to environmental impacts and potential for pollution
  11. regulatory requirements and organisational procedures for communicating with the workforce, managers, colleagues, other utilities, local authorities, emergency services, regulatory bodies and customers
  12. organisational procedures for securing tools, equipment and sites
  13. how to communicate updates on unplanned events
  14. recording systems and procedures for unplanned events
