Overview

This standard is concerned with installing bay windows, including dealing with all the materials and ensuring specifications are met and installations are completed in line with Building Regulations or Building Standards and legislation. It covers preparing, positioning and securing bay window assemblies and includes structural support consideration, thermal performance and weatherproofing.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to interpret technical specifications, risk assessments and manufacturer instructions, applying safe systems of work throughout installation. The standard emphasises responsibilities including maintaining building safety, managing interfaces with load-bearing elements and ensuring fire and structural integrity are not compromised.

This standard is for you if you work in the Fenestration and Glazing Industry and are involved in on-site installation work of bay windows in domestic or commercial environments.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. comply with organisational guidance and requirements, manufacturer instructions and health and safety legislation throughout the installation process
  2. identify, select and handle fenestration materials and components required to meet technical specifications minimising damage and waste
  3. identify supplied products suitability for the installation
  4. remove, store and dispose of fenestration products from the existing structure in line with regulatory and organisational requirements causing minimal damage to the existing structure
  5. use personal protective equipment and other tools and equipment in line with manufacturers’ instructions and organisational requirements
  6. mark, measure, and cut sills and ancillary components to size and shape in line with specifications and safe working practices
  7. follow all instructions to reduce material waste in line with regulations and organisational requirements
  8. assemble bay window frames and associated components in line with specifications and manufacturer guidance
  9. inspect and prepare apertures to ensure they are fit for purpose, structurally sound, and meet specification requirements
  10. prepare the aperture prior to fenestration product installation in line with specification and legislative requirements
  11. position and secure bay window frames in apertures in line with specification and organisational requirements
  12. select and use appropriate tools, equipment, and access systems for fixing installations
  13. identify and apply correct type, size, and quantity of fixings in line with specifications and comply with current legislation
  14. install glass units in line with specifications and organisational requirements
  15. install ancillary products in line with specifications and organisational requirements
  16. apply sealing and weatherproofing materials to achieve airtight and watertight installations following manufacturer guidance and instructions
  17. check and maintain drainage paths and holes to ensure water egress in line with standard operating procedures
  18. verify that installed windows are plumb, level, and square after securing and that all functional elements operate in line with manufacturer’s specification and organisational requirements
  19. conduct interim and final inspections of work against specifications, organisational quality standards, and building regulations or standards
  20. complete finishing tasks ensuring trims, seals, and internal finishes meet specification and aesthetic requirements
  21. maintain accurate records of installation activities, inspections, and any corrective actions taken in line with organisational procedures and requirements
