Overview

This standard is about interpreting the script and determining the resources required for a theatre and live production in accordance with any legislation, industry regulations and guidelines.

It is about liaising with the director, departments and specialists to ascertain the needs and agreeing priorities for resources with senior personnel. This could include resources such as specialist equipment, rehearsal support for example, intimacy coordinators or fight directors and musical provision. 

This standard is for Stage Managers, Assistant Stage Managers or Company Managers.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. breakdown the script to identify the resources required
  2. work with the director to confirm their vision
  3. agree who is responsible for providing the resources identified and timescales for the production
  4. liaise with other departments to confirm specialist requirements
  5. produce a list of all specialist equipment and resources
  6. determine what specialist resources are needed and select the suppliers to use in line with organisational policies and legal obligations
  7. confirm with production managers that requirements are within budget limits
  8. record decisions and create plots
  9. monitor progress against the agreed plans

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the nature and priority of the activities which occur in the various stages of the production process
  2. the quantity and types of resources required for different stages of the production process
  3. how different environments, formats and types and scales of production affect the nature and quantity of resources required
  4. how to research and identify best value when ordering production resources
  5. the organisational policies and legal requirements which apply to obtaining resources
  6. the production requirements, including changes to previous schedules document and version control
