Overview 

 

This standard is about preparing and managing the rehearsals process. You will be responsible for providing performers with the information that they require to get to rehearsals on time and to the right venue.

You will need to organise performers to attend any special calls including costume, wigs, hair & make-up and publicity.

You are also required to ensure that the physical aspects for the rehearsal are in place and work as required. You are also required to identify and resolve problems and conflicts to ensure minimum disruption to the rehearsal.

You will be required to support the artistic development of the production, working within budget constraints and timelines, by taking responsibility for the smooth running of rehearsals.

 

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. provide rehearsal calls at the agreed time and in line with organisational procedures and professional codes of practice
  2. provide notice of any special requirements for the rehearsal
  3. meet and welcome performers and others to rehearsals and conduct briefings as required
  4. organise performers to attend costume, WHAM, publicity and special calls as required
  5. check and confirm that physical elements for rehearsals are sourced, supplied and in working condition
  6. organise physical elements required for the rehearsal in accordance with the rehearsal schedule and production requirements
  7. organise the space to meet rehearsal requirements, adjusting or compensating for unwanted features, including environmental conditions
  8. identify any changing requirements from the rehearsal notes
  9. check and confirm people are advised of the possibilities and limitations of sets, props and costumes
  10. check technical equipment is operated in line with requirements
  11. monitor the rehearsal to confirm it is conducted in accordance with the director's requirements, rehearsal schedule, organisational policies and procedures and production budget
  12. alter the daily rehearsal schedule as necessary to reflect required changes and advise appropriate personnel
  13. identify problems and resolve conflicts with the minimum disruption to the rehearsal process
  14. update production documents to reflect changes as they occur and communicate these to personnel
  15. maintain communication between personnel and action or report issues arising from rehearsals
  16. organise and take part in production meetings and notify production departments of developments arising from these meetings

 

Knowledge and understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the operation of technical areas of the production
  2. how to apply legislation, regulations and organisational policies to rehearsals
  3. how to apply specific backstage safety requirements
  4. how to prepare a prompt copy to required industry standards
  5. how to resolve conflict
  6. how to prepare the required production documentation
  7. how to apply communication techniques including active listening, questioning and non verbal techniques
  8. how to communicate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  9. how to resolve issues of cross-cultural miscommunication
  10. how to identify the personnel requirements for different types of rehearsals and for specific scenes
  11. the importance of monitoring rehearsals and the rehearsal schedule, how to do this and you role and responsibility in relation to this
  12. the circumstances that might lead to deviations from the rehearsal schedule and corrective actions to take in response to these
  13. organisational policies and procedures for scheduling rehearsals and distributing rehearsal schedules and how to notify people of changes
  14. problems that might occur in obtaining resources and the actions to take in response to these
  15. organisational, professional and union agreements for hours of work, rest periods and calls
  16. how different features of the rehearsal space affect the
  17. how to identify the environmental features required of a rehearsal space for example in relation to room temperature for dance or where a piece involves nudity; requirements with regard to flooring or air quality
  18. the importance of monitoring rehearsals for changing requirements and your role and responsibilities in relation to this
  19. aspects of the developing rehearsals that might affect requirements for and the organisation of, the rehearsal space and how to respond
  20. the importance of adequate refreshments and rest facilities
  21. the importance of rehearsal calls and how to provide these
