EUSLDC3/4 Collect and analyse data to identify water network issues
Overview
This Standard is about collecting and analysing data to identify water network issues. This standard can be used in relation to leakage, drought, peaks in demand, new user demand or any other types of unaccounted for water loss.
This includes obtaining relevant data from data logging equipment and historical sources, analysing it against expectations, identifying the need for further investigations and drawing conclusions about network performance. It also includes identifying areas of potential issues and calculating potential water loss, pressure issues and high usage.
This Standard is for anyone who collects and analyses data to identify water network issues.
Performance Criteria
You must be able to:
follow safe working and hygiene practices in accordance with organisational procedures at all times
obtain information about the distribution network relevant to the work in line with organisational procedures
programme and install data-logging equipment as required for specified monitoring activities in line with manufacturers’ instructions
carry out operational checks in line with manufacturers’ instructions to check that equipment is working as expected once installed
collect data recorded by specified data-logging equipment in line with organisational procedures
remove data-logging equipment on completion of monitoring periods in line with organisational procedures
use data from different points on the distribution system to establish a picture of flow and pressure in specified areas
analyse data and establish the need for further investigations in accordance with organisational procedures
estimate water loss against water usage, identifying trends from specified areas according to data analysis and reliable sources
record and provide information on data collection and analysis activity in accordance with organisational procedures
deal with problems or issues in line with organisational processes, reporting those you cannot resolve to relevant people
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
regulations, statutory requirements, company procedures, processes and practices relating to health and safety, hygiene, the environment and emergencies
sources of information on network condition, network operations, consumption variations, previous investigations and area characteristics
how different water loss problems manifest themselves on the network and factors to take into account when making a judgement about them, including leakage, drought, peaks in demand, new user demand or any other types of unaccounted for water loss
types of control and monitoring activity, their purpose, when to use them and the consequences of performing them incorrectly including permanent distinct metered areas monitoring, surveying, ad hoc monitoring, pressure managed area management
types of data-logging equipment, the data they can provide and what they can monitor including pressure, flow, noise, turbidity and chlorine including relevant parameters for monitoring these
how to carry out pre-use checks, prepare, install, programme, monitor and remove data-logging equipment including pressure loggers, noise loggers, flow loggers, correlating loggers, water quality monitors
how to interpret and analyse data including historic data, trends, flow and pressure, fast frequency, data from fixed installations or temporary installations
how to relate analysed data to network plans and calculate water loss
causes of typical and unusual problems that can affect network performance, data collection and data analysis including abnormal events, incompleteness of data or faulty, wrongly located or wrongly programmed data- logging equipment
how to resolve typical and unusual problems including further investigation, reviewing equipment performance, area characteristics and when to escalate problems you cannot resolve
recording and reporting requirements and procedures for data collection and analysis activity including area characteristics, data logging programming and deployment, the need for additional data and conclusions about water loss
