Overview
This standard is about carrying out repair and maintenance work on treatment processing plant and equipment to ensure treatment processes operate efficiently.
It includes shutting down and isolating equipment, carrying out maintenance, monitoring safety, reporting defects and malfunctions and disposing of waste.
This standard is suitable for operators carrying out first line maintenance as well as third party contractors carrying out maintenance on water, waste water, or sludge treatment processing plant and equipment.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
ensure all materials, tools and parts recommended by manufacturers and in line with organisational requirements are available before repair and maintenance work commences
shut down or isolate, or request designated people to shut down or isolate, plant or equipment being worked on
inform affected people when plant and equipment is to be shut down and when to expect plant and equipment to be re-started and re-commissioned
issue and display safety warnings in advance of repair and maintenance to plant and equipment
carry out repair and maintenance in line with the timescales specified in the maintenance schedule
carry out repair and maintenance in the specified sequence for the plant and equipment being worked on using procedures specific to the site
follow manufacturers' and organisational specifications and safety procedures for using instruments and monitoring equipment to carry out repair and maintenance
check that safety monitoring procedures and equipment are in place and functioning throughout repair and maintenance work
make sure that work is carried out using monitoring equipment, tools and procedures specific to the site
restore plant and equipment to specified operational performance when maintenance is finished, in line with organisational requirements and safety procedures
dispose of waste materials and unwanted parts in accordance with safe working practices and organisational procedures
report malfunctions of monitoring instrumentation, tools or the plant environment to designated people without delay
report problems with repair and maintenance activities which are outside the responsibility for your job role and which require designated skilled people or maintenance work
provide maintenance reports to designated people where decisions outside your authority are required
use performance checks, observation, noise, heat, vibration and remote monitoring to check for malfunctions or other maintenance which might be required
complete and store maintenance records in line with organisational procedures
follow security procedures in line with organisational protocols and policies
provide access to maintenance records to appropriate people on request

who to contact when maintenance and problems affecting treatment operations occur
procedures and the factors to be considered for isolation, diverting flows, bypassing treatment process units, operating temporary plant and shut down of plant and equipment, and who has authority to carry this out
typical and unusual problems which may occur during maintenance and the limits of your authority for resolving them
who to report any problems that you cannot resolve and the organisational procedures for doing so
who needs information about progress with maintenance activities and the organisational procedures for passing it to them
how to source materials and parts
the characteristics of faulty monitoring equipment and instrumentation and the outcome of equipment and instrumentation breakdown
protocols and policies for confidentiality, cyber security and site security and why they are important
principles for maintenance of treatment process plant and equipment
the organisation’s procedures for recording and storing information
how and when to produce data in text, tabular and graphical formats and how to interpret it
