Overview                      

This standard is about assembling pipes and fittings for gas network activities.

It can apply to any type of fuel gas or combinations of fuel gas including, but not restricted to, natural gas, LPG, blended or 100% hydrogen.

This involves selecting and checking the condition of pipes, fittings and equipment, producing assemblies, securing them and working in line with quality and safety requirements and industry standards.

This standard is for those carrying out operations during gas network activities.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. select the type of pipes and fittings in compliance with work instructions and technical specifications
2. check components and installation equipment for operability and ensure free from damage
3. follow procedures to replace any defective pipes or fittings, non-match pipes or fittings and sub-standard pipes or fittings
4. select and wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with organisational procedures
5. check the condition of the excavation conforms with work instructions and technical specifications
6. select, prepare and operate installation equipment in accordance with the manufacturer's operational instructions and organisational procedures
7. position pipes and fittings in accordance with the specification
8. assemble pipes and fittings to industry standards using appropriate jointing techniques
9. take adequate precautions to prevent damage to pipes, fittings, tools and equipment during installation
10. protect installed assets with fine fill in accordance with work instructions and technical specifications
11. maintain proximity distances from other utilities apparatus in accordance with technical specifications
12. ensure installed assets are supported and anchored in accordance with technical specifications
13. maintain the security and safety of the system and third parties where work is not complete or not to schedule
14. ensure work practices conform to safe working procedures throughout the work activity
15. check quality of installation and confirm compliance with organisational policies and procedures
16. report to the designated person damage or defects to tools, equipment or materials
17. report work which is incomplete and not to schedule to the designated person
18. refer problems and conditions outside the responsibility of the job role to a designated person using approved procedures

13. the implications of using incorrect plant, tools, materials and system components
14. actions to be taken where plant, tools, materials and system fail to meet required specification
15. faults associated with use of inappropriate installation methods and tools
16. dangers of inadequate handling and lifting procedures
